Concordia Students Place in Top Four at Intel Science Fair in US

Five Concordia high school students recently traveled to the US to present their independent scientific research at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF). Having won in the China-wide competition in Chengdu back in February, these students earned the opportunity to present their work to a broader audience at the 69th annual ISEF in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania.

ISEF is the world's largest international pre-college science competition and receives submissions from students hailing from around the globe.

“This is the most powerful talent pipeline in the world,” says Maya Ajmera, president and CEO of Society for Science & the Public. “These kids have been elevated to be the best of the best.”

Out of the 1,400 submissions at this year’s competition, Concordia students Yoonhyun J. (G 11), Dakota M. (G12), and Anna W. (G11) placed 4th with their project, The Nutmeg-ical Solution: Investigating Bactericidal Effect of Myristica Fragrans for Treatment of Heliobacter Pylori Infection.

The students focused on their project as part of their Independent Research class, an applied learning course that allows students to carry out research in the area of life science under the guidance of one or more faculty members.

This is HUGE for our students and for the school, shares Concordia math teacher Kathleen Mahoney; especially considering this is only the second year Concordia students have submitted projects to the Intel fair.
