High School Physics Students Around Shanghai Learn from Concordia Teacher Joel Klammer

On March 16th, 86 high school physics students from international schools around Shanghai and Beijing joined Concordia physics teacher Joel Klammer for the 8th Shanghai Particle Physics Masterclass. The two-day master class consisted of lectures, and labs and a visit to a local particle accelerator. They were also given the opportunity to analyze actual data from the Large Hadron Collider at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Switzerland.

The first day of class introduced students to particle physics, modern particle detectors, and the Standard Model. This year they analyzed over 10,000 events looking for Z and Higgs particle decays in the CMS detector. The students then visited the Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Source in the afternoon. The class met again on Sunday, March 18th via a CERN videoconference to share results with other schools and physicists in the USA and Switzerland.
